In honor of celebrating Reading Romances Pre-Party Blogiversary, I wanted to share my favorite drink with you all - a Mexican Martini. It goes great with reading any romance book out there. I highly recommend it.  
Mexican Martini1 serving

2 oz tequila

1 1/2 oz Cointreau® orange liqueur

2 oz sweet and sour mix

1 oz lime juice

2 oz orange juice

1 splash Sprite® soda

2 olives

Pour all ingredients into a large cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a large cocktail/martini glass (8+ ounces) with a salt rim. Add two olives on a spear, and serve.

Alexa is the kind of daughter who’d do anything to help her parents, even if it meant making a deal with the devil. Not literally – duh, but Nicholas Ryan is no angel by any means. He needs a wife for a year to fulfil the terms of his late, meddling uncle’s will. The bastard tries to mess with him even from the grave! Nick is Alexa’s only option, and she happens to be in desperate need for some cash. Will she be able to handle this blast from the past for such a long period of time? He’s a non-believer for crying out loud. Love, marriage, family? These concepts simply don’t exist in his world. Business is Nick’s life. That is, until Alexa starts pushing his buttons.

It doesn’t happen often that one stumbles upon a book-mention on Facebook, decides to buy it on a whim, and ends up loving everything about the story. To me, it did! Sit down my fellow book lovers and prepare yourselves, I’m about to praise the heck out of this contemporary romance. 

The cover is insanely beautiful, wouldn’t you agree?! In fact, I didn’t find anything to complain about the book as a whole. The writing was superb. Poignant, funny, charming, and most of all...easily digestible (yummm). Huh??? Enjoyable, smooth, genre-appropriate. Get it? :-) I plowed through the book in record time; turning page after page after page. Awesome! I laughed, sniffled (Dear Kleenex, I love you. Best wishes!), and glared at the hero for being an idiot more than once. 

Alexa’s and Nick’s interaction - dialogue, gestures or just a meaning-laden look - was unbelievably hilarious at times, yet never lost its sense of seriousness. I haven’t giggled my way through a contemporary romance like this in quite a while. However, the author maintained a fair balance of humour and distress. She had to, because both hero and heroine had issues to deal with. Especially Nick, who needed to learn to take risks; be carefree at last. He had a very controlling personality. Now and then I glimpsed a bit of Christian Grey in him (Fifty Shades series by E L James). Needless to say I love these books. Nick’s upbringing left him void of any feelings. Even worse, he considered most emotions perturbing. Bothersome! There’d be no point in spontaneous expressions of love or happiness. I felt beyond bad for him. Why couldn’t I be the one to save him? I definitely got my bad boy fix. Nick was set in his ways and didn’t plan on changing anything about them. I shouldn’t have been so darn happy about an emotionally crippled hero *blushingscarlett*. 

Thankfully, Alexa pulled the rug out from under his feet simply by being her bubbly, life-loving self. What a treat it was to sit back and watch Nick lose control for once. Let’s just say that she drove him batshit crazy. That feeling of helplessness was foreign to him, so it wasn’t really a surprise that he frequently lashed out at her in an attempt to regain his composure. He talked himself into believing the worst of her. My reaction to that was a condescending headshake. You poor, delusional guy – she’s the one for you, dummy! Don’t get me wrong, he might have acted like a petulant child, but considering his past, it was with good reason. I was attracted to him from the start and it didn’t take me long to connect with the character on a much deeper level. Not despite, but because of his dark outlook on....everything but work. 

I really liked Alexa as well. A truly lovable person, one would be lucky to have as a friend. Don’t be fooled by your first impression of her. I thought her a bit pathetic in a cute way, but soon learned how strong of a person she really is. No pushover; a rather feisty one. She got right in Nick’s face about his too reasonable behaviour. Her personality and their shared past probably were the only reasons why Nick let himself get close to her in the first place. The author got the absolute most out of this genre and wrote a story that will be a permanent fixture on my shelf (okay, in my Kindle collection). 

Along with her best friend Maggie (who reminded me an awful lot of my bestie), the secondary characters - Alexa’s big family - rocked my socks off. I didn’t want to say goodbye to them, that’s how much I came to loved them. They, of course, overwhelmed Nick. He was sooo uncomfortable around them at first. After a lifetime of disappointments I had to cut him some slack. Still, I couldn’t wait for that light bulb to go off in his head. A beautiful moment. 

A contemporary romance you will love. Intense and sweet (a little corny in the end, but who cares – I was a junky in crack-heaven)! Glass of wine. Couch. Blanket. Ready? Happy reading! 5 stars to The  Marriage Bargain by Jennifer Probst.

Sempre by J.M. Darhower is an powerful, outstanding story that covers the gamut of the human condition while being a very sweet love story between two young adults whose lives have not been easy and have been emotionally traumatized.  Haven Antonelli is brought into the DeMaro household as permanent housekeeper under the direction of Carmine’s father after extricating her from a very atrocious situation.   

As time goes on Carmine and Haven develop a steadfast relationship that is all about two different, yet not so different worlds, coming together and deeply affecting each other by healing each other’s past and present emotional wounds. In addition, the ties she develops with Carmine’s brother, father, and friends assists in her metamorphasis into a very confident, lovely young woman from the scared person she was after the trauma she endured in her younger life of true slavery.

The story that unfolds is gripping and perceptively emotional, yet moments of sweetness take over the depth of the story.  A quality that softens the seriousness of the circumstances. Plus, ties to the mafia add to the intensity of the story as well as the family connections that are discovered that bind the young couple even closer to each other and binging them together forever (sempre).  As the novel unfolds, the reader will excitedly find themselves turning the pages or hitting the forward button on their e-reader. J.M. Darhower writes with skill, purpose, and depth.  This is one of the best stories of contemporary romance that I have read in a long time.

Javier and Lilah have been ferociously attracted to each other for two years.  But, because she is the property of a powerful vampire, their laws and customs to do not allow for their joining. Because of this, Javier has kept his distance from Lilah and has just pined for her from a distance. As, fate would have it, the two succumb to the draw they feel towards one another. After that, their connection deepens. 

Covet by Felicity Heaton is a great novella! Ms. Heaton was able to connect Javier and Lilah in such a way that the romance and eroticism were a perfect combination to make the story believable, even in a short amount of page space. Kudos!

Hello everyone!  Laurie, thank you for having me. I’m so glad to be here today to do a guest post.

A readaholic reviewing books for fun – that’s what my header says, and it just so happens to be the truth. Gather together my fellow book addicts. Share your thoughts on this particular topic with me! Wait, …… what topic? Let’s talk about negative reviews. 

• What’s a negative review?

Right on to the tough questions, huh? I came up with them all by myself, so no more complaining. I think of a review as negative when the aspects of a book I didn’t like clearly outweigh the ones I did. Of course every review generally goes hand in hand with a specific rating. In my opinion 3 stars is not a bad one, even though there are people around that seem to think so. Either way, what’s most important to me when on the hunt for a new book is the content of a review. There’s no way I don’t take a look at the rating, but if the blurb interests me, I always read the review and make my decision based on what my fellow reviewers have to say. What does that mean for my own ramblings? A 2.5-star (or less) rating must be seen in relation to my thoughts about the book. Dislikes, issues, problems of all kinds are subjective. While I might have felt no connection to a certain plot, you were able to relate to it. We could be in complete agreement or have different expectations in terms of what we feel is good / bad about a book. That’s the beauty of it all! 

• Have you ever written & posted a negative review?

I have a total of 68 reviews on my blog. 21 of them are 5-star ratings / 7 are 4.5-star ratings / 13 are 4-star ratings / 7 are 3.5-star ratings / 9 are 3-star ratings / 3 are 2.5-star ratings / 3 are 2-star ratings / 2 are 1.5-star ratings / 3 are 1-star ratings.


I never set out to dislike a book. If I get a request and feel like the book is not for me I decline the offer. However, sometimes - no matter how much you want to love a story - it just doesn’t happen. I will keep on writing negative reviews, but never with the intention to slander the author’s work. I’m simply sharing my opinion with my followers. Be conscious of how you phrase your criticism. You can’t negotiate meaning. All you do is write the review and the author will most likely read it. I often get emotional about books (on both ends of the positive-negative spectrum), but try to avoid being overly harsh. That doesn’t always work, though. I’m only human after all.  

• How detailed is your review policy?

It is very important to put a review policy in place. The author or publisher needs to be able to see your rating system and be aware of where your review will be posted / shared / promoted. For example, I post my reviews on the blog, Goodreads, Amazon, Facebook, G+ and Twitter.  No surprises, especially not when it turns out to be a negative review. 

I also added a self-imposed 3.5/4-star “minimum” limit for possible author interviews or giveaways.

• How about authors’ reactions to a negative review?

I’ve had it all! I never heard from some again. A couple went off the deep end (insults, trying to get me to change the rating, telling me my opinion is wrong ). Thankfully, the majority kept it simple with a short “appreciate you taking the time to review my book” – which is completely okay with me. I’m sure it’s not easy to get a negative review of something you put so much effort into. I understand how hard it can be. It’s just that there’s no other way for me as a reviewer and human being than stay true to myself. 

From the bottom of my heart, a big thank you to all the authors and publishers who were kind enough to provide me with a review copy since I started my blog in June of last year. It was my pleasure to read and review!

As Mac gets further entrenched into the mystery of her sister’s demise, she meets the mysterious Jericho Barrones. Barrones and Mac come to an uneasy alliance in the quest to search for Fae objects of power, one of which was specifically mentioned (the Sinsar Dubh) by Alina in the last voice mail message she left on Mac's phone before she died. The Sinsar Dubh is a very dark, evil book which was created by the Unseelie King.

This book was an absolute joy to read. Karen Marie Moning's unique voice lures the reader into a world you could never dream up on your own. The smooth anecdotic writing of the author is stunningly resplendent. Moning builds a bridge between the reader and Mac through her writing by eliciting the feeling that the reader is the one and only confidant Mac feels safe enough to confide all of her secrets, insecurities, epiphanies, and emotions to as she is led into a very dark, scary, unfamiliar world. Hold on tight to your book as you are sucked into Mac's world. This story will amaze and titillate while emotions you never thought a book could could call forth swamp your imagination.

Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James

Excellent!

Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James is another stunner of a novel and a great ending to her Fifty Shades Trilogy.  Even though Chrisitan and Ana are now married, the excitement and intensity between the couple has not diminished. In fact, I think it was stepped up a notch. To add some levity to the serious issues dealt with in the novel are Ana’s inner goddess and subconscious and the snarky e-mail diatribes between Christian and Ana.

As the happy couple are enjoying their phenomenal honeymoon abroad, they still have Christian’s mercurial emotional swings and possessiveness to deal with. That being said, it adds to the voracity of the on-going healing process that Christian must face in order to heal. It is Ana’s love, understanding, and many compromises that continue to help him dig out of his dark emotional hole. 

While trying to deal with his inner demons, Ana has some personal battles of her own to wage. Even though it is her deepest wish to set Christian free from his personal demons, she finds herself needing to exert her independence and fight for some autonomy so that she continues to be her own person, not his possession.Adding to the angsty issues in the relationship is the antagonistic plot of the who-done-it portion of the story that began in the previous books in this trilogy. Running these two distinct plots side by side makes reading this book doubly enjoyable.

E.L. James is a wonderful story teller. Her voice is smooth and keeps the story going like a well oiled machine. Once you start, it is hard to put Ms. James‘ book down.  She gives her stories eroticism, emotional poignancy, humor and peppers it all with suspense to keep her readers very entertained.

Fifty Shades Freed is the perfect finish to the trilogy. The ONLY complaint I have is that Ana and Christian’s story has come to a conclusion. I know I can revisit them when by re-reading this series; but, it is just not the same.  I lament the fact that their story has come to an end. I highly recommend this book to all romance readers; however, I really think you should read the first two books in the trilogy (Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker) to get the full impact of this story. This novel will mean so much more to you as a reader when you become completely invested in these two characters.

She will  become just another of the dashing libertine's callously discarded broken hearts --- which means Sebastian will simply have to work harder at his seductions ... or perhaps surrender his own heart for the very first time in the name of true love.
